ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Who am I?

Hi, my name is Robin. I am currently 22 years old. I finally recieved my autism diagnosis last year after three years of struggling and confusion. I started this blog originally, before all that, and i'm leaving those posts up for you all to see, because they're still relevant, and I hope you all can get something from them. Currently, I'm struggling with adult life, fresh out of university, thrown into the adult world so I decided to try and bring myself back to this outlet. To give myself something to write again. So please, join me if you wish.

ABOUT THE BLOG

This blog is just me writing about my thoughts, feelings and experiences living with autism. I will be touching on many topics related to autism and neurodivergency, including topics commonly discussed in the community, and other things I just fancy writing about... because. I hope you enjoy my ramblings, and you can get something out of them, whether you're diagnosed, self diagnosed, still questioning, or just a curious neurotypical, I welcome you to autism writes!

(and yes, the name is a play on autism speaks, because funnily enough, i'm not very good at speaking. I am however, good at writing, and so, here we are)

ABOUT MISSING PIECE

What is it? And Why?

Missing Piece is a Webcomic written and drawn entirely by me. It is currently still a work in progress, but chapters will be released as I finish them, so keep on the look out!

Missing Piece tells the story of Emmi, a 16 year old student as she slowly begins to discover that she is autistic, thanks to the help of her best friend Anya. This isn't a smooth process, however, as she grapples with feelings of imposter syndrome, and the judgement of others who do not understand. One of these others is Lauren, Head Girl of the school and avid autism advocate, who's passion derives from her experience growing up with a high support needs autistic brother.

Now I know what you're thinking. "Missing piece?? Sounds very puzzle-piece-y to me..." My use of this imagery in the title is purely satiracle, and I suppose in a way, used to "reclaim" the puzzle piece, by switching the meaning to one more focused on the autistic individual - discovering autism later down the line, autism being the "missing piece" needed to complete us and allow us to truly understand ourselves. Thats certainly how it felt to me.

Yes, this is a webtoon almost entirely about autism. I know some people asking for representation for autistic people simply want autistic characters in other contexts, existing in all sorts of stories, but if you're anything like me, having developed autism as a special interest through researching it for yourself, then I would imagine that maybe you would kind of want a story that is all about autism. Specifically, self discovery and self diagnosis of autism. This is a story that is underrepresented, likely due to most media not wanting to dip their toes into the controversy of self diagnosis, but i am not a big media company. I am just me, writing and drawing this all myself, so you know what? I can do whatever I want!

So I hope you'll indulge me, and maybe give Missing Piece a read. Set aside your judgments about the title, or the subject matter, and read. And my hope is that you'll come out the other side, either with more understanding of the struggles all autistic people face, diagnosed or otherwise, or you'll come out of it feeling like your story has, in some capacity, been represented, and that you can finally have characters you can relate to in that regard.
